Golf Driver/ball Impact Acoustic Measurement System
نویسندگان
چکیده
This experiment assessed whether or not a golf club impact acoustic testing methodology using a fixed golf club/launched golf ball setup would record less error in the captured acoustic signatures than industry standard methodologies (a stationary ball/swinging club setup). Two steel-shafted golf drivers were tested using this new system that launched golf balls using a pressurized air cannon into an anechoic chamber at a fixed club specimen, where the ensuing impact signature was recorded by three microphones located inside the chamber. To quantify the level of error captured in each signature, the standard deviations in frequency mode and decay time between successive shots were calculated, and these values were compared to industry-supplied data. The data suggested that the experimental methodology recorded less error than the industry methodology. The data collected from the experimental setup also illustrated several distinct and club-specific frequency response modes, many of which were not present in the data supplied by industry, suggesting that industry testing methodologies do not fully capture the club-head impact response.

Modelling the acoustics of a golf ball impacting a titanium plate
Finite element techniques are often applied to the design and development of golf clubs. While distance and accuracy are the primary design characteristics, the acoustics of the ball/club impact play an important role in player perception. Previous work has applied finite element techniques to predict the sound of a golf ball/club impact. This research helps to lay the foundations for implement...
متن کاملThe role of upper torso and pelvis rotation in driving performance during the golf swing.
While the role of the upper torso and pelvis in driving performance is anecdotally appreciated by golf instructors, their actual biomechanical role is unclear. The aims of this study were to describe upper torso and pelvis rotation and velocity during the golf swing and determine their role in ball velocity. One hundred recreational golfers underwent a biomechanical golf swing analysis using th...
متن کاملRealistic Simulation of Golf Ball Impact
This paper presents an Abaqus/Explicit simulation of the impact event when a golf club hits a golf ball. This is a challenging subject for finite element simulations because of it is characterized by high strain rate behavior. The simulation emphasizes accurate material characterization and realistic model construction. Specifically, an advanced nonlinear viscoelastic material model from Veryst...
متن کاملGolf Ball Impact: Material Characterization and Transient Simulation
This paper presents an LS-DYNA ® simulation of the impact event when a golf club hits a golf ball. This is a challenging subject for finite element simulations because it is characterized by high strain rate behavior: the impact occurs within milliseconds and the golf ball experiences very large deformation during this period because of the ball’s polymeric shell and core. The simulation strate...
متن کاملReal-ear acoustical characteristics of impulse sound generated by golf drivers and the estimated risk to hearing: a cross-sectional study
OBJECTIVES This study investigated real-ear acoustical characteristics in terms of the sound pressure levels (SPLs) and frequency responses in situ generated from golf club drivers at impact with a golf ball. The risk of hearing loss caused by hitting a basket of golf balls using various drivers was then estimated. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING The three driver clubs were chosen on ...
